No one could have anticipated what 2020 had in store for us. Things rapidly went from 'normal' to 'strange' and unfamiliar and as humans, we were forced to literally adapt or die. I was incredibly fortunate to still have a job and went only one month without a salary. This month happened to be May and around Mother's Day I was strapped for cash. My mom and I had just spent majority of our hard lockdown together in Johannesburg, which over and above the pandemic, was extremely taxing for her. More than that she was unemployed and despite this would give her last to make sure everyone else was 'okay'. It was then that the idea of homemade candles dawned on me. Using nothing but ingredients I had in my kitchen, I stayed up all night making 6 candles. I would later learn that apart from being beautiful, they symbolized light and the ability to show someone the light they have inside them, when they may feel like they've lost it. It further speaks to how self-care is not a luxury but a priority and I want my candles to be able to create the space for people to honor themselves as much as they do others.
